What does the treatment do?

During SkinPen® treatment, the device creates many controlled, tiny micro-injuries on the skin. These injuries help to kick-start the body’s natural repair process, providing a boost to collagen production. Collagen is a protein that is produced by the body to heal the skin and keep it looking taut, smooth, and youthful. As we age, our skin becomes less capable of producing collagen, contributing to the effects of ageing. When scarring occurs, this is a result of irregular collagen formations during the healing process. By creating micro-injuries, and generating more collagen within the skin, both ageing and scarring concerns can be treated with SkinPen®.

SkinPen® takes a three-phase approach to rejuvenating the skin. The first phase, known as the inflammation stage, is the treatment itself, involving piercing the skin to trigger collagen production. During this stage, wounds are disinfected, any debris or dirt build up on the skin is removed, and new tissue is created.

Second phase

The second phase, or the proliferation stage, occurs when the wound is rebuilt using new cells, and a new network of blood vessels develop. Finally, phase three, or the remodelling stage, takes place, and the wound is replaced with new, healthy tissue.

Pre-Care Instructions for SkinPen Procedure

Do NOT use retinoids 1 week before treatment.
If you have an active breakout, active cold sores or open lesions, you should reschedule your treatment.
If you are taking a blood thinner, aspirin, or any other medication, you have the prosperity to bleed easily while on, let your dermatologist know.
Wait at least:
- One week before or after Botox or fillers.
- Two to three weeks before or after laser treatments.
- Wait 6 months following Isotretinoin use.

POST-Care Instructions for SkinPen Procedure

Immediately after your treatment, the skin will look as though you have a moderate to severe sun burn, and skin may feel warm and tighter than usual.
The area may be swollen.
Use tepid water for the initial 24 hours to rinse the treated area. After 24 hours use a gentle cleanser to cleanse the face for the following 72 hours and gently dry the treated skin.
Make sure that your hands are clean when touching the treated area.
Do NOT pick, peel, rub, scrub or irritate your skin in any way while it is healing, as it can cause infection or scarring.
Avoid heat, saunas and sweaty activity, this includes exercise of any kind for 72 hours after the procedure.
Make-up may be worn 48hours after the treatment if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Treatments will I need?

How many treatments that are necessary will depend on your unique skin concerns. With SkinPen®, most patients can expect to see an improvement in just three treatments, spaced 30 days apart. During your consultation, Dr Injibar will be able to provide you with a more precise treatment plan.

How Soon will I see results?

Microneedling stimulates the production of Collagen within the skin. As collagen reserves need time to rebuild and repair in the skin, patients should expect to see results six months after their final treatment.

Am I suitable for SkinPen®?

SkinPen® is suitable for all skin types, however, there are some contraindications. During your consultation, Dr Injibar will assess your medical history to ensure that SkinPen® is safe for you, and able to achieve the desired results.

What is the downtime?

There is no downtime associated with SkinPen® treatment. As long as Dr Injibar’s aftercare advice is followed, patients can return to their usual routines without delay and still experience outstanding results. The skin may appear pink or red for 2 to 3 days immediately after treatment, though this is most like a mild sunburn, and should subside fairly swiftly. Dryness, tightness, itching, and inflammation are also common side effects that should resolve themselves over time.

My teenage daughter attended having suffered with bouts of regular breakouts which caused her significant concern and distress. Dr Hiba took the time to explain what was causing the problem and gave very pragmatic and honest advice about the treatment pathway.
