What are Smoker’s lines?

Smoker’s lines refer to the fine lines and wrinkles that occur around the mouth when we pucker our lips. As we get older, these lines may become a permanent fixture on the face. This is because the skin becomes less able to repair itself, largely because levels of hyaluronic acid, collagen, and elastin decrease within the skin as we get older. This leaves the skin less able to repair itself from repetitive puckering motions.

What are the causes of smokers’ lines?

Smokers’ lines are caused by years of smoking. The repeated muscle movements that happen when a person smokes a cigarette cause the skin around the mouth to wrinkle.

How can smokers’ lines be prevented?

There is no guaranteed way to prevent smokers’ lines, but quitting smoking is the best thing you can do to reduce your risk. Additionally, using sun protection and moisturizers may help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

If you are a smoker and are concerned about developing smokers’ lines, quitting smoking is the best way to prevent them. If you have already developed wrinkles, there are treatments available that can help to reduce their appearance. Talk to your doctor about which treatment option may be right for you.

Use sun protection

One of the best ways to prevent any type of wrinkles is to protect your skin from the sun. Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher and wear protective clothing when you are outdoors.

Moisturize your skin

Keeping your skin hydrated can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Use a moisturizer that is designed for your skin type and apply it daily.

What are treatments available for smokers’ lines?

If you have already developed wrinkles, there are treatments available that can help to reduce their appearance. Some options include:

• Anti-ageing injections – can help to relax the muscles that cause wrinkles.
• Dermal fillers – Dermal fillers can help to plump up the skin and smooth out wrinkles.
• Laser resurfacing: This procedure uses a laser to remove the top layer of skin, which can help to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
•  Microneedling is a treatment that uses small needles to create tiny punctures in the skin. This can help to stimulate collagen production and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
• Skin tightening procedures such as Ultraformer 3, can help to stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.
• Chemical peels – Chemical peels can help to remove the top layer of skin.
